What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

If you've never visited a chiropractor before, it's completely normal to wonder what will happen at your first appointment.

At Move Free Pontypool, your first visit isn't about rushing straight into treatment. It's about understanding what's been bothering you, how it's affecting your life and what may be contributing to the problem.

Here's what you can expect.

  1. We Start With a Conversation

Your appointment begins with a detailed consultation.

We'll talk about your current symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, previous injuries and your general health.

I'll also want to understand how the problem is affecting you. That might mean difficulty working, training, sleeping, walking or simply doing the things you enjoy.

This gives me a much better picture than simply asking, "Where does it hurt?"

  2. Physical Assessment

Next, I'll carry out an assessment based on your symptoms and history.

    This may include looking at:

    • Movement and mobility

    • Muscle and joint function

    • Strength

    • Neurological function where appropriate

    • Orthopaedic tests where appropriate

    • The movements or activities that reproduce your symptoms

Not everybody needs exactly the same tests. Your assessment is tailored to you and the reason you've come in.

  3. Understanding What's Going On

Once the assessment is complete, I'll explain what I've found in straightforward language.

We'll discuss what may be contributing to your symptoms, what we can work on and what I think the most appropriate next steps are.

If I don't think chiropractic care is appropriate, I'll tell you. If further investigation or assessment by another healthcare professional is needed, I'll discuss that with you too.

  4. Will I Be Treated on My First Visit?

Often, treatment can begin during your first appointment when it is clinically appropriate and you're happy to proceed.

Treatment isn't automatically the same for everyone.

Depending on your assessment, your care may include joint mobilisation or manipulation, soft-tissue techniques, movement and rehabilitation exercises, and advice to help you manage the problem between appointments.

Everything should be explained beforehand, and treatment only takes place with your consent.

  5. Do I Have to Have My Back or Neck "Cracked"?

    No.

Manipulation is only one technique that may be used as part of chiropractic care.

If it's appropriate, I'll explain what it involves, why I'm recommending it, the alternatives available and answer any questions before you decide whether you'd like to proceed.

There are plenty of other treatment options available.

  6. What Should I Wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.

Sportswear, shorts, leggings or loose-fitting clothing are ideal.

Depending on the area being assessed, you may be asked whether you're comfortable exposing part of the body. This will always be discussed with you first and your comfort and privacy respected.

  7. What Happens Afterwards?

Before you leave, you should have a clearer understanding of what we've found and what happens next.

Where appropriate, we'll discuss a personalised treatment and rehabilitation plan based on your goals.

The aim isn't simply to provide temporary relief. It's to help you understand the problem, improve your movement and give you practical ways to manage your health and stay active.

Ready to Get Started?

If pain, stiffness or an injury is stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, your first appointment is an opportunity to understand what's going on and decide on the most appropriate next steps.
